ADRA's Project TOGETHER Reinforces Inclusive Awareness Campaign for Young Individuals

In a collaborative effort with the Department of Education, ADRA's Project TOGETHER is intensifying its inclusive awareness campaign aimed at young individuals. The initiative seeks to raise awareness and equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage menstrual hygiene effectively. By establishing a supportive environment for both students and teachers, ADRA Philippines aims to promote inclusivity in line with the values and philosophies of the Adventist community.

Project TOGETHER, which stands for "Uniting Towards Gender Equality for Enjoyment of Women's and Girls' Total Health and Rights," is a 5-year multi-sectoral project funded by Global Affairs Canada. The project's goal is to enhance the enjoyment of health-related rights for vulnerable children, adolescent girls and boys, women, and men in Cambodia, Kenya, the Philippines, and Uganda, particularly those in indigenous, remote, or resettlement settings. In the Philippines, the project is being implemented in the province of Camarines Sur, specifically targeting the municipalities of Buhi, Caramoan, Garchitorena, Ocampo, and Siruma.

Across the region, Project TOGETHER has organized a series of educational and empowering activities in 32 schools as part of the campaign. ADRA highlights the importance of every Filipino child's right to learn and understand the fundamental aspects of personal hygiene and organization, recognizing education and access to knowledge as crucial. The initiative aims to reduce the social stigma surrounding menstruation and increase knowledge about menstrual hygiene management by engaging students and instructors.

The campaign's objective is to encourage acceptance, respect, and understanding among students of all genders. It seeks to encourage open dialogue, break the silence surrounding menstrual health, and provide a safe space for individuals to discuss their concerns and seek assistance.

Acknowledging the significance of promoting holistic health and addressing individual needs, menstrual hygiene is incorporated into Project TOGETHER's strategy. ADRA's comprehensive approach to menstrual hygiene education includes not only information dissemination but also the provision of essential resources and support to ensure practical application. Emphasizing the importance of using hygienic products, appropriate disposal methods, and general health maintenance during menstruation is a key aspect of the campaign.

ADRA Philippines recently visited Fundado National High School (FNHS) in South Luzon, one of the beneficiary institutions. Despite the challenges posed by Typhoon Betty, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) effectively organized one of the 32 Project TOGETHER Campaigns in May 2023. The campaign was spearheaded by Rex M. Ilustre, one of the coordinators of FNHS, and Edmundo A. Gamora, Jr., the school head. Under the guidance of John Francis Iglesia, ADRA's health and nutrition officer, Project TOGETHER played a significant role in organizing and implementing the campaign.

Additionally, the campaign aims to offer support and resources to students facing challenges related to menstrual hygiene. By collaborating with local health organizations and community volunteers, Project TOGETHER ensures that individuals in need receive the necessary assistance, including access to menstrual products and guidance on menstrual health management.

As the campaign progresses, Project TOGETHER remains committed to refining and expanding its initiatives in collaboration with local educational institutions, health authorities, and community leaders. By continuously prioritizing reproductive hygiene education and support, the campaign aims to create a future where individuals are better informed, empowered, and included.
